On Wednesday, V. Lytvyn opened the parliamentary hearings "On the Reform of the System of Bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and Introduction of European Standards." V. Lytvyn stated that the topic of the hearings is utterly important.  

 

According to the Head of the Parliament, this issue, "still provokes public concern." However, "state leaders pay attention to this issue, as well as to the entire law enforcement system of Ukraine." V. Lytvyn believes that initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine to hold these hearings proves that it understands the situation and the necessity to act with the support of the Verkhovna Rada and the government. V. Lytvyn stated that this topic should also be considered in the light of the administrative reform.

 

"Human rights, safety and confidence are the key issues," V. Lytvyn stressed. "We should exert every effort to make sure that in difficult situations people could address the police and would not be afraid of the law enforcement system, but turn to it for protection and help."

 

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called on the People´s Deputies to discuss the problems of this branch without political implications, as Ukraine is facing such global challenges as terrorism.

 

V. Lytvyn hopes that debaters will discuss financial support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in a "calm and balanced" way.

 

Summing up, the Head of the Parliament called for discussing all aspects of the law enforcement system and seeking the methods of its reform with account for the public opinion.
